Words of Wisdom—Socrates

Socrates (469-399 B.C.) was a Greek philosopher and one of the originators of Western philosophy. He is most known for the Socratic method, which involves repeatedly asking questions instead of relaying information. Due to his unconventional style and outspoken pursuit of the truth, he was sentenced to death for corrupting the youth of Athens.

Below we list some words of wisdom from Socrates.

“No one can teach, if by teaching we mean the transmission of knowledge, in any mechanical fashion, from one person to another. The most that can be done is that one person who is more knowledgeable than another can, by asking a series of questions, stimulate the other to think, and so cause him to learn for himself.”

“A free soul ought not to pursue any study slavishly, for nothing that is learned under compulsion stays with the mind.”

“When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.”

“Most people, including ourselves, live in a world of relative ignorance. We are even comfortable with that ignorance, because it is all we know. When we first start facing truth, the process may be frightening, and many people run back to their old lives. But if you continue to seek truth, you will eventually be able to handle it better. In fact, you want more! It’s true that many people around you now may think you are weird or even a danger to society, but you don’t care. Once you’ve tasted the truth, you won’t ever want to go back to being ignorant.”

“The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less.”

“He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.”

“He is the richest who is content with the least.”

Aristotle (384–322 BC) was a Greek philosopher taught by Plato. He wrote about many subjects and his philosophy continues to heavily influence almost every form of knowledge in the West.

Below are words of wisdom from Aristotle.

“Be a free thinker and don’t accept everything you hear as truth. Be critical and evaluate what you believe in.”

Leo Tolstoy (September 9, 1828—November 20, 1910) was a Russian writer and is recognized as one of the greatest authors of all time. War and Peace is widely considered his best work. 

Below we list some words of wisdom from Leo Tolstoy. 

“The more we live by our intellect, the less we understand the meaning of life.”

François-Marie Arouet (November 21st, 1694 – May 30th, 1778), also known as his pen name Voltaire, was one of the first internationally successful writers. He wrote more than 2,000 books and pamphlets and 20,000 letters, along with plays, essays, poems, and scientific expositions. He was an advocate of freedom of speech and religion.

Below are words of wisdom from Voltaire.

“If you want to know who controls you, look at who you are not allowed to criticize.”

“If there’s life on other planets, then the earth is the Universe’s insane asylum.”

“Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices.”

Nelson Mandela (July 18, 1918—December 5, 2013) was an anti-apartheid revolutionary who was targeted by the South African ruling elite, charged with treason, and sent to prison. He never gave up fighting for human rights and after his release from prison, eventually became president of South Africa.

Below we list some words of wisdom from Nelson Mandela.

“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I’d still be in prison.”

“One of the most difficult things is not to change society – but to change yourself.”

Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and helped draft the United States Declaration of Independence. He was also the first United States postmaster general, founder of many civic organizations, and a printer, publisher, scientist, inventor, writer, and diplomat.

Below we list some words of wisdom by Benjamin Franklin.

Words of Wisdom—Plato

Plato (429–347 BC), the Greek philosopher, is known as one of the greatest and most influential philosophers of the ancient world. The academy he founded, one of the first Western schools to offer higher learning, helped shape how we structure schools and universities today. Besides philosophy, he taught mathematics, political theory, science, and it’s theorized he also taught metaphysics, considering he wrote extensively on the topic.

What is less known about Plato is that he believed in reincarnation and the soul is eternal. He also believed the lost continent of Atlantis existed thousands of years before, then disappeared in one day due to catastrophic forces.

Below we list select words of wisdom by Plato.

“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.”

“A grateful mind is a great mind which eventually attracts to itself great things.”

“Everything changes and nothing remains still.”

“The cure of the part should not be attempted without treatment of the whole. No attempt should be made to cure the body without the soul. Maya Angelou was an American civil rights activist and wrote seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry. She was also an actress, director, and produced plays, movies, and public television programs over 50 years, and received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees. Below we list some words of wisdom from Maya Angelou.

“If you are always trying to be normal you will never know how amazing you can be.”

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

“You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I’ll rise!”

Words of Wisdom: Mātā Amritānandamayī

Mātā Amritānandamayī Devī, often known as Amma (“Mother”), is an Indian Hindu spiritual leader and humanitarian. Her followers call her “the hugging saint.” She said, “I don’t see if it is a man or a woman. I don’t see anyone different from my own self. A continuous stream of love flows from me to all of creation. This is my inborn nature. The duty of a doctor is to treat patients. In the same way, my duty is to console those who are suffering.”

Mata Amritanandamayi accepts the spiritual practices of all religions as different methods toward the same goal. She emphasizes the importance of meditation, selfless service, and developing patience, compassion, self-control, and forgiveness. Amma said these practices get our minds out of the way so we can perceive that we are not really our bodies or minds.

She refers to this understanding as jivanmukti (liberation while alive). She said, “Jivanmukti is not something to be attained after death, nor is it to be experienced or bestowed upon you in another world. It is a state of perfect awareness and equanimity, which can be experienced here and now in this world, while living in the body. Having come to experience the highest truth of oneness with the Self, such blessed souls do not have to be born again. They merge with the infinite.”

Below are more words of wisdom by Mata Amritanandamayi.

“Fill your hearts with love and gratitude. Life gives us what we need and not necessarily what we want. It follows its own wisdom, which is often incomprehensible to our gross minds. We should learn to accept situations in life. This attitude of acceptance is the secret to happiness.”

“Be like the honeybee who gathers only nectar wherever it goes. Seek the goodness that is found in everyone.”

“Most people are concerned only with what they can get from the world, but it is what we are able to give to others that determines the quality of our life.”

“Happiness depends on how you accept, understand and surrender to situations.”

“Love is our true essence. Love has no limitations of caste, religion, race, or nationality. We are all beads strung together on the same thread of love. To awaken this unity-and to spread to others the love that is our inherent nature-is the true goal of human life.”

“Love is the only medicine that can heal the wounds of the world.”

“Many of us may have watched the waves at sea. They rise, then fall, then rise again, then fall again… and this cycle continues endlessly. It is the same with our experience of the world and its objects and relationships. We may find happiness, but this happiness will soon turn to sorrow. The sorrow that we feel will subsequently turn back to happiness but this oscillation continues endlessly. In order to maintain inner balance, we need to find peace within instead of depending on the external world.”

“Happiness is within everyone, but we are not able to experience it because of our ego’s likes and dislikes.”

“Instead of “I love you,” it would be better to say “I am love-I am the embodiment of Pure Love.” Remove the I and you, and you will find that there is only Love. It is as if Love is imprisoned between the I and you. Remove the I and you, for they are unreal; they are self-imposed walls that don’t exist. The gulf between I and you is the ego. When the ego is removed the distance disappears and the I and you also disappear. They merge to become one – and that is Love.”

“Learn to be thankful to everyone, to the entire creation, even to your enemy and also to those who insult, because they all help you to grow.”

“The first step in spiritual life is to have compassion. A person who is kind and loving never needs to go searching for God. God rushes toward any heart that beats with compassion-it is God’s favorite place.”

“Pure love removes all negative feelings. Destroying all selfishness, it expects nothing but gives anything. Pure love is a constant giving up- giving up of everything that belongs to you. What really belongs to you? Only the ego. Love consumes in its flames all preconceived ideas, prejudices and judgments, all those things which stem from the ego. Pure love is nothing but the emptying of the mind of all its fears and the tearing off of all masks. It exposes the Self as it is.”

Words of Wisdom: Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla (7-10-1856—1-7-1943) invented the induction motor, artificial lighting, and was “… a pioneer in the discovery of radar technology, X-ray technology, remote control, and the rotating magnetic field—the basis of most AC machinery. Tesla is most well-known for his contributions in AC electricity and for the Tesla coil.” https://www.biography.com/inventor/nikola-tesla 

He was obsessed with the wireless transmission of energy and attempted to build an electrical tower-based global, wireless communication system, which would have provided free energy for everyone.

Tesla was considered eccentric, yet was clearly ahead of his time. According to this article, “… all his creations in his later years were subsequently classified as top-secret by the FBI. Titled ‘Nikola Tesla Part 03 of 3,’ the third of 3 declassified FBI reports about Tesla contains 64 pages with certain portions blotted out in black ink. But one paragraph states the following: ‘The ‘Space People’ visited the Tesla engineers many times, and informed us that Tesla was from Venus, brought to this planet as a baby, and was left with Mr. and Mrs. Tesla in a remote mountain province in 1856 in what is now Yugoslavia.’”
