Words of Wisdom: Mātā Amritānandamayī

Share Button

Mātā Amritānandamayī Devī, often known as Amma (“Mother”), is an Indian Hindu spiritual leader and humanitarian. Her followers call her “the hugging saint.” She said, “I don’t see if it is a man or a woman. I don’t see anyone different from my own self. A continuous stream of love flows from me to all of creation. This is my inborn nature. The duty of a doctor is to treat patients. In the same way, my duty is to console those who are suffering.”

Mata Amritanandamayi accepts the spiritual practices of all religions as different methods toward the same goal. She emphasizes the importance of meditation, selfless service, and developing patience, compassion, self-control, and forgiveness. Amma said these practices get our minds out of the way so we can perceive that we are not really our bodies or minds.

She refers to this understanding as jivanmukti (liberation while alive). She said, “Jivanmukti is not something to be attained after death, nor is it to be experienced or bestowed upon you in another world. It is a state of perfect awareness and equanimity, which can be experienced here and now in this world, while living in the body. Having come to experience the highest truth of oneness with the Self, such blessed souls do not have to be born again. They merge with the infinite.”

Below are more words of wisdom by Mata Amritanandamayi.

“Fill your hearts with love and gratitude. Life gives us what we need and not necessarily what we want. It follows its own wisdom, which is often incomprehensible to our gross minds. We should learn to accept situations in life. This attitude of acceptance is the secret to happiness.”

“Be like the honeybee who gathers only nectar wherever it goes. Seek the goodness that is found in everyone.”

“Most people are concerned only with what they can get from the world, but it is what we are able to give to others that determines the quality of our life.”

“Happiness depends on how you accept, understand and surrender to situations.”

“Love is our true essence. Love has no limitations of caste, religion, race, or nationality. We are all beads strung together on the same thread of love. To awaken this unity-and to spread to others the love that is our inherent nature-is the true goal of human life.”

“Love is the only medicine that can heal the wounds of the world.”

“Many of us may have watched the waves at sea. They rise, then fall, then rise again, then fall again… and this cycle continues endlessly. It is the same with our experience of the world and its objects and relationships. We may find happiness, but this happiness will soon turn to sorrow. The sorrow that we feel will subsequently turn back to happiness but this oscillation continues endlessly. In order to maintain inner balance, we need to find peace within instead of depending on the external world.”

“Happiness is within everyone, but we are not able to experience it because of our ego’s likes and dislikes.”

“Instead of “I love you,” it would be better to say “I am love-I am the embodiment of Pure Love.” Remove the I and you, and you will find that there is only Love. It is as if Love is imprisoned between the I and you. Remove the I and you, for they are unreal; they are self-imposed walls that don’t exist. The gulf between I and you is the ego. When the ego is removed the distance disappears and the I and you also disappear. They merge to become one – and that is Love.”

“Learn to be thankful to everyone, to the entire creation, even to your enemy and also to those who insult, because they all help you to grow.”

“The first step in spiritual life is to have compassion. A person who is kind and loving never needs to go searching for God. God rushes toward any heart that beats with compassion-it is God’s favorite place.”

“Pure love removes all negative feelings. Destroying all selfishness, it expects nothing but gives anything. Pure love is a constant giving up- giving up of everything that belongs to you. What really belongs to you? Only the ego. Love consumes in its flames all preconceived ideas, prejudices and judgments, all those things which stem from the ego. Pure love is nothing but the emptying of the mind of all its fears and the tearing off of all masks. It exposes the Self as it is.”

“Don’t be discouraged by your incapacity to dispel darkness from the world. Light your little candle and step forward.”

Words of Wisdom: Nikola Tesla

Share Button

Nikola Tesla (7-10-1856—1-7-1943) invented the induction motor, artificial lighting, and was “… a pioneer in the discovery of radar technology, X-ray technology, remote control, and the rotating magnetic field—the basis of most AC machinery. Tesla is most well-known for his contributions in AC electricity and for the Tesla coil.” https://www.biography.com/inventor/nikola-tesla

He was obsessed with the wireless transmission of energy and attempted to build an electrical tower-based global, wireless communication system, which would have provided free energy for everyone.

Tesla was considered eccentric, yet was clearly ahead of his time. According to this article, “… all his creations in his later years were subsequently classified as top-secret by the FBI. Titled ‘Nikola Tesla Part 03 of 3,’ the third of 3 declassified FBI reports about Tesla contains 64 pages with certain portions blotted out in black ink. But one paragraph states the following: ‘The ‘Space People’ visited the Tesla engineers many times, and informed us that Tesla was from Venus, brought to this planet as a baby, and was left with Mr. and Mrs. Tesla in a remote mountain province in 1856 in what is now Yugoslavia.’”

The following are some of Nikola Tesla’s most famous quotes:

“The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.”

“No free energy device will ever be allowed to reach the market.”

“It will soon be possible to transmit wireless messages around the world so simply that any individual can carry and operate his own apparatus.”

“Within a few years a simple and inexpensive device, readily carried about, will enable one to receive on land or sea the principal news, to hear a speech, a lecture, a song or play of a musical instrument, conveyed from any other region of the globe.”

“All that was great in the past was ridiculed, condemned, combated, suppressed—only to emerge all the more powerfully, all the more triumphantly from the struggle.”

“The mind is sharper and keener in seclusion and uninterrupted solitude. Originality thrives in seclusion free of outside influences beating upon us to cripple the creative mind. Be alone. that is the secret of invention: be alone, that is when ideas are born.”

“We have soon to have everywhere smoke annihilators, dust absorbers, ozonizers, sterilizers of water, air, food and clothing, and accident preventers on streets, elevated roads and in subways. It will become next to impossible to contract disease germs or get hurt in the city, and country folk will go to town to rest and get well.”

“What one man calls God, another calls the laws of physics.”

“Our senses enable us to perceive only a minute portion of the outside world.”

“Of all the frictional resistances, the one that most retards human movement is ignorance, what Buddha called ‘the greatest evil in the world.’ The friction which results from ignorance…can be reduced only by the spread of knowledge and the unification of the heterogeneous elements of humanity. No effort could be better spent.”

“To know each other we must reach beyond the sphere of our sense perceptions.”

“My brain is only a receiver–in the Universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength and inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know that it exists.”

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.”

“Anti-social behavior is a trait of intelligence in a world full of conformists.”

“The gift of mental power comes from God, Divine Being, and if we concentrate our minds on that truth, we become in tune with this great power. My Mother had taught me to seek all truth in the Bible.”

“I don’t care that they stole my idea…I care that they don’t have any of their own.”

“I could only achieve success in my life through self-discipline, and I applied it until my wish and my will became one.”

“Today’s scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality.”

“The Buddhist expresses it in one way, the Christian in another, but both say the same: We are all one.”

“That is the trouble with many inventors; they lack patience. They lack the willingness to work a thing out slowly and clearly and sharply in their mind, so that they can actually ‘feel it work.’ They want to try their first idea right off; and the result is they use up lots of money and lots of good material, only to find eventually that they are working in the wrong direction. We all make mistakes, and it is better to make them before we begin.”

“This work somehow awakened my dormant powers of will and I began to practice self-control. At first my resolutions faded like snow in April, but in a little while I conquered my weakness and felt a pleasure I never knew before – that of doing as I willed.”

“Edison was by far the most successful and, probably, the last exponent of the purely empirical method of investigation. Everything he achieved was the result of persistent trials and experiments often performed at random but always attesting extraordinary vigor and resource. Starting from a few known elements, he would make their combinations and permutations, tabulate them and run through the whole list, completing test after test with incredible rapidity until he obtained a clue. His mind was dominated by one idea, to leave no stone unturned, to exhaust every possibility.”

“There is no subject more captivating, more worthy of study, than nature. To understand this great mechanism, to discover the forces which are active, and the laws which govern them, is the highest aim of the intellect of man.”

“Most certainly, some planets are not inhabited, but others are, and among these there must exist life under all conditions and phases of development.”

“A new idea must not be judged by its immediate results.”

“I do not think you can name many great inventions that have been made by married men.”

Words of Wisdom—Isaac Newton

Share Button

Isaac Newton (January 4, 1643—March 31, 1727), born in England, is known as one of the greatest and most influential mathematicians and scientists, ever. He developed the laws of motion and gravitation, and was instrumental in devising infinitesimal calculus. He also showed what Pythagoras reasoned: all is number, and nature (and the universe) is based on mathematics.

What is less known about him is that he was an alchemist, believed in the philosopher’s stone, and translated the Emerald Tablet, an ancient, mysterious engraving made by Hermes Trismegistus. “In the later years of his life, Isaac Newton began a wild search for the philosopher’s stone. This, as some people believed in his time, was a mystical substance that could change base metals like lead into gold and could grant anyone who drank it eternal life. To Newton, this was no superstition—this was a genuine science. For whatever reason, he fully and completely believed that the philosopher’s stone was real. He studied every paper on alchemy he could find and ran test after test in a lab of his own making, struggling to create an elixir that would give him eternal life. The key, Newton seems to have believed, was mercury. In his notes, he had a recipe written by other alchemists that called for ‘sophick mercury,’ and he seems to have created some of his own…Newton seems to have believed that there was a coded message hidden within the Emerald Tablet that would let him control the prima materia and turn any element into any other, and he wrote a whole series of notes trying to unpack its secrets.”

Below we list select words of wisdom by Isaac Newton.

“What we know is a drop, what we don’t know is an ocean.”

“Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who sets the planets in motion.”

“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.

“Truth is ever to be found in the simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.”

“Atheism is so senseless. When I look at the solar system, I see the earth at the right distance from the sun to receive the proper amounts of heat and light. This did not happen by chance.”

“I know not how I seem to others, but to myself I am but a small child wandering upon the vast shores of knowledge, every now and then finding a small bright pebble to content myself with while the vast ocean of undiscovered truth lay before me.”

“Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.”

“Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy.”

“No great discovery was ever made without a bold guess.”

“I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.”

“In the absence of any other proof, the thumb alone would convince me of God’s existence.”

“All my discoveries have been made in answer to prayer.”

“My powers are ordinary. Only my application brings me success.”

“Truth is the offspring of silence and meditation.”

“He who thinks half-heartedly will not believe in God; but he who really thinks has to believe in God.”

“To arrive at the simplest truth requires years of contemplation.”

“If I am anything, which I highly doubt, I have made myself so by hard work.”

“If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been due more to patient attention, than to any other talent.”

“God created everything by number, weight and measure.”

“A man may imagine things that are false, but he can only understand things that are true, for if the things be false, the apprehension of them is not understanding.”

“When two forces unite, their efficiency double.”

“What goes up must come down.”

“Every particle of matter is attracted by or gravitates to every other particle of matter with a force inversely proportional to the squares of their distances.”

“Plato is my friend, Aristotle is my friend, but my greatest friend is truth.”

Sir Isaac Newton was asked how he discovered the law of gravity. He replied, “By thinking about it all the time.”

“If two angels were sent down from heaven -one to conduct an empire and the other to sweep the streets -they would feel no inclination to change employment because an angel would know that no matter what we are doing, it’s an opportunity to bring joy, deepen our understanding and expand our life.”

“Trials are medicines which our gracious and wise Physician prescribes because we need them; and he proportions the frequency and weight of them to what the case requires. Let us trust his skill and thank him for his prescription.”

Words of Wisdom: Dalai Lama

Share Button

Dalai Lama is a title of the spiritual leader of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The current and 14th Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso, who lives in India as a refugee. Below are some words of wisdom by Dalai Lama
.

“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called Yesterday and the other is called Tomorrow. Today is the right day to Love, Believe, Do and mostly Live.”

“If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.”

“Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.”

“Don’t ever mistake my silence for ignorance, my calmness for acceptance or my kindness for weakness. Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.”

“Man surprised me most about humanity. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

“Give the ones you love wings to fly, roots to come back and reasons to stay.”

“The planet does not need more successful people. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of all kinds.”

“Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.”

“When you talk you are only repeating something you already know. But, if you listen you may learn something new.”

“Every day, think as you wake up, today I am fortunate to be alive, I have a precious human life, I am not going to waste it. I am going to use all my energies to develop myself, to expand my heart out to others; to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. I am going to have kind thoughts towards others, I am not going to get angry or think badly about others. I am going to benefit others as much as I can.”

“Whether one is rich or poor, educated or illiterate, religious or nonbelieving, man or woman, black, white, or brown, we are all the same. Physically, emotionally, and mentally, we are all equal. We all share basic needs for food, shelter, safety, and love. We all aspire to happiness and we all shun suffering. Each of us has hopes, worries, fears, and dreams. Each of us wants the best for our family and loved ones. We all experience pain when we suffer loss and joy when we achieve what we seek. On this fundamental level, religion, ethnicity, culture, and language make no difference.”

“Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”

“I don’t know whether the universe, with its countless galaxies, stars and planets, has a deeper meaning or not, but at the very least, it is clear that we humans who live on this earth face the task of making a happy life for ourselves. Therefore, it is important to discover what will bring about the greatest degree of happiness.”

“When you think everything is someone else’s fault, you will suffer a lot. When you realize that everything springs only from yourself, you will learn both peace and joy.”

“Follow the three R’s: – Respect for self. – Respect for others. – Responsibility for all your actions.”

“We can reject everything else: religion, ideology, all received wisdom. But we cannot escape the necessity of love and compassion. This, then, is my true religion, my simple faith. In this sense, there is no need for temple or church, for mosque or synagogue, no need for complicated philosophy, doctrine, or dogma. Our own heart, our own mind, is the temple. The doctrine is compassion. Love for others and respect for their rights and dignity, no matter who or what they are: ultimately these are all we need.”

“If someone does not smile at you, be generous and offer your own smile. Nobody needs a smile more than the one that cannot smile to others.”

“Pain can change you, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a bad change. Take that pain and turn it into wisdom.”

“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”

“Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.”

“If every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation”

2022 Basic Astrological and Numerological Cycles

Share Button

Hermes Trismegistus, the author named in the text of the enigmatic Emerald Tablet, said, “That which is below is like that which is above and that which is above is like that is below.”

According to the Hermetic tradition, occult sciences such as astrology and numerology symbolize events and circumstances in your life. Notice the quote above states “…is like…” instead of “makes happen.” The microcosm reflects the macrocosm, and the macrocosm reflects the microcosm.

The ancients believed human beings are intimately connected to the universe. You have a choice to either learn about the energy flow of the universe and move with it, or ignorantly fight against the currents of life.

One of the best ways to move with the currents of life, to know and capitalize on your personal timing, is through personalized comprehensive astrology and numerology.

If you aren’t ready for an in-depth strategy, learning about universal occurrences such as the Universal Year (e.g., 2022 = 2+0+2+2=6), eclipses, and retrogrades can still be helpful.

Two Universal and Personal Numerology Cycles

See this blog post and this article for information about the Universal Year. Scroll down within this article to get an idea about the balanced, over-balanced, and under-balanced form of each of the root numbers 1-9, which can give you a little insight about each Universal Year and your Personal Year. The Universal Year is intimately connected to the Personal Year, which is more relevant to you, personally, than the Universal Year. The second linked article above also features information about the Personal Year and how to calculate it.

To take it a step further, simply add the Universal Year or Personal Year to the current calendar month to get the Universal Month or Personal Month. For example, since the Universal Year in 2022 is 6 (2022 = 2+0+2+2=6), in January the Universal Month is 7. Since January is the first month of the year simply add January (1) plus 2022 (6) which equals 7. The Personal Month is derived the same way; if you’re in a 3 Personal Year in 2022, you’re in a 4 Personal Month in January of 2022. These four cycles are a good place to start with basic numerology. Although these cycles are only four of hundreds of timing cycles, they are easy to follow and symbolically strong enough that you will recognize their importance.

Listed below are select universal astrological events for 2022.

2022 eclipses:

Solar eclipse 4-30-2022, 10 degrees, 28 minutes Taurus

Lunar eclipse 5-15-2022, 25 degrees, 17 minutes Scorpio

Solar eclipse 10-25-2022, 02 degrees, 00 minutes Scorpio

Lunar eclipse 11-8-2022, 16 degrees, 00 minutes Taurus

2022 Mercury retrograde periods:

Mercury retrograde 1-14-2022 10 degrees, 20 minutes Aquarius

Mercury direct 2-3-2022 24 degrees, 22 minutes Capricorn

Mercury retrograde 5-10-2022 04 degrees, 51 minutes Gemini

Mercury direct 6-3-2022 26 degrees 05 minutes Taurus

Mercury retrograde 9-9-2022 08 degrees, 55 minutes Libra

Mercury direct 10-2-2022 24 degrees 11 minutes Virgo

Mercury retrograde 12-29-2022 24 degrees, 21 minutes Capricorn

Mercury direct 1-18-2023 08 degrees, 08 minutes Capricorn

2022 Venus retrograde periods:

Venus retrograde 12-19-2021 26 degrees, 29 minutes Capricorn

Venus direct 1-29-2022 11 degrees, 04 minutes Capricorn

2022 Mars retrograde periods:

Mars retrograde 10-30-2022 25 degrees, 36 minutes Gemini

Mars direct 1-12-2023 08 degrees, 07 minutes Gemini

Be a little more cautious regarding important matters involving higher than average risk on the day of and the days surrounding eclipses and Mercury retrogrades. This includes, but is not limited to, big purchases, investments, and legal contracts.

See this blog post for information about Mercury retrograde.

See this blog post for information about eclipses. See this blog post for additional information about eclipses.

Venus and Mars retrogrades traditionally are not as noticeable as Mercury retrogrades. As always, any single universal celestial phenomenon symbolically affects you in a unique way, as it relates to your personal astrological patterns. A particular retrograde or eclipse may represent big life changes for one person, and almost nothing for another person.

This blog post includes information about multiple, basic astrology factors, including Mercury retrograde, Venus retrograde, Mars retrograde, and more.

Although the aforementioned celestial and numerological happenings are minor in relation to the massive body of universal and natal indicators, tracking these cycles and events, especially in conjunction with your natal factors and patterns, can help you limit your risk and save time and money.

Scientific Evidence of the Power of Meditation

Share Button

One of the best ways to get centered is through meditation. The feel-good state of meditation directly combats stress and anxiety, and helps to improve your overall outlook on life.

Besides the many scientifically documented benefits (some of which we document below), meditation helps you flow with the currents of life and avoid false starts and dead-ends. For regular meditators, it’s common to receive a signal in meditation to try an alternate path, and realize later it saved them time or money.

Below we list several scientific studies highlighting the benefits of meditation.

Meditation and Anxiety

Twenty-five studies reported statistically superior outcomes in the meditation group compared to control. No adverse effects were reported. Conclusions: This review demonstrates some efficacy of meditative therapies in reducing anxiety symptoms, which has important clinical implications for applying meditative techniques in treating anxiety.”

Chen KW, Berger CC, Manheimer E, et al. Meditative therapies for reducing anxiety: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Depression and Anxiety. 2012;29(7):545–562. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22700446/

Meditation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

“Women in the MG showed greater reductions in IBS symptom severity immediately after training…but evidenced significantly greater improvements in the MG than in the SG at the 3-month follow-up. Mindfulness scores increased significantly more in the MG after treatment, confirming effective learning of mindfulness skills. Participants’ ratings of the credibility of their assigned interventions, measured after the first group session, were not different between groups. Conclusions: This randomized controlled trial demonstrated that mindfulness training has a substantial therapeutic effect on bowel symptom severity, improves health-related quality of life, and reduces distress. The beneficial effects persist for at least 3 months after group training.” Gaylord SA, Palsson OS, Garland EL, et al. Mindfulness training reduces the severity of irritable bowel syndrome in women: results of a randomized controlled trial. American Journal of Gastroenterology. 2011;106(9):1678–1688. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21691341/

Meditation and Smoking Cessation

“Scientific interest on mindfulness-based interventions for the treatment of smoking has increased over the past decade. All articles reported promising results, especially for smoking cessation, relapse prevention, number of cigarettes smoked, the moderation of mindfulness on the strength of relationship between craving and smoking, and the development of coping strategies to deal with triggers to smoke. Most of the articles corresponded to pilot or feasibility randomized controlled trials with low risk of bias regarding random sequence generation, attrition, and reporting. However, few articles reported sufficient data on selection, performance, and detection bias. Conclusions: Mindfulness appears to induce positive effects on mental health, which might contribute to the maintenance of tobacco abstinence.” de Souza ICW, de Barros VV, Gomide HP, et al. Mindfulness-based interventions for the treatment of smoking: a systematic literature review. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. 2015;21(3):129–140. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25710798/

Meditation and Chronic Illness

“Meditation has been studied in populations with fibromyalgia, cancer, hypertension, and psoriasis. While earlier studies were small and lacked experimental controls, the quality and quantity of valid research is growing. Meditation practice can positively influence the experience of chronic illness and can serve as a primary, secondary, and/or tertiary prevention strategy. Health professionals demonstrate commitment to holistic practice by asking patients about use of meditation, and can encourage this self-care activity. Simple techniques for mindfulness can be taught in the clinical setting.” Bonadonna R. Meditation’s impact on chronic illness. Holistic Nursing Practice. 2003;17(6):309–319. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14650573/

Meditation and Insomnia

“Conclusions: Mindfulness meditation appears to be a viable treatment option for adults with chronic insomnia and could provide an alternative to traditional treatments for insomnia.” Ong JC, Manber R, Segal Z, et al. A randomized controlled trial of mindfulness meditation for chronic insomnia. Sleep. 2014;37(9):1553–1563. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25142566/

Words of Wisdom–Martin Luther King, Jr.

Share Button

Martin Luther King, Jr., born January 15, 1929, died April 4, 1968, was the most visible American civil rights leader from 1955 until his assassination. He furthered civil rights through nonviolence, motivated by his Christian beliefs and the peaceful activism of Mahatma Gandhi. We suspect his wise soul incarnated to teach the world about race relations, and so much more, and are grateful for his wisdom. Below we share some of his quotes, which are good reminders for the present too.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

“Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.”

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

“We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”

“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

“A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true.”

“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”

“It is always the right time to do the right thing.”

“Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than to convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love.”

“Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”

“We must learn that to expect God to do everything while we do nothing is not faith but superstition.”

“Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”

“Use me, God. Show me how to take who I am, who I want to be, and what I can do, and use it for a purpose greater than myself.”

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”

“Let’s build bridges, not walls.”

“This is the great new problem of mankind. We have inherited a large house, a great ‘world house’ in which we have to live together– black and white, Easterner and Westerner, Gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Muslim and Hindu– a family unduly separated in ideas, culture and interest, who, because we can never again live apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace.”

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

“If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”

“I still believe that standing up for the truth of God is the greatest thing in the world. This is the end (purpose) of life. The end of life is not to be happy. The end of life is not to achieve pleasure and avoid pain. The end of life is to do the will of God, come what may.”

Words of Wisdom—Personal Adversity

Share Button

According to conventional wisdom, any goal is achievable if you work hard. Alas, personal adversity sometimes squashes that promise.

In such cases, all the benefits are through the journey, not the desired goal. Personal adversity frequently stems from things that you can’t control in life.

Hang in there if you’re enduring extraordinary trials in life. On a spiritual level, your soul may be rejoicing at your resiliency.

Below we list famous quotes related to personal adversity.

“We don’t develop courage by being happy every day. We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity.” Barbara De Angelis

“If you are lucky enough to never experience any sort of adversity, we won’t know how resilient you are. It’s only when you’re faced with obstacles, stress, and other environmental threats that resilience, or the lack of it, emerges: Do you succumb or do you surmount?” Maria Konnikova

“Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are.” Arthur Golden

“Adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it.” Horace

“Sweet are the uses of adversity which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, wears yet a precious jewel in his head.” William Shakespeare

“In every adversity there lies the seed of an equivalent advantage. In every defeat is a lesson showing you how to win the victory next time.” Robert Collier

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” Horace

“Adversity is the diamond dust Heaven polishes its jewels with.” Thomas Carlyle

“Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.” Lou Holtz

“You’ll never find a better sparring partner than adversity.” Golda Meir

“You show me anybody that’s great in anything they do, I’ll show you somebody that’s persevered, demonstrated that mental toughness to overcome some obstacles and adversity.” Sean McVay

“There is no education like adversity.” Benjamin Disraeli

“Adversity, and perseverance and all these things can shape you. They can give you a value and a self-esteem that is priceless.” Scott Hamilton

“Prosperity is not without many fears and distastes; adversity not without many comforts and hopes.” Francis Bacon

“Everybody has adversity in their lives and we all have to find ways of overcoming them. You’ve got to soldier on, make the best of it, look for the positive in everything.” Judith Durham

“Three hundred years ago a prisoner condemned to the Tower of London carved on the wall of his cell this sentiment to keep up his spirits during his long imprisonment: ‘It is not adversity that kills, but the impatience with which we bear adversity.” James Keller

“He who does not tire, tires adversity.” Martin Farquhar Tupper

“Search for the seed of good in every adversity. Master that principle and you will own a precious shield that will guard you well through all the darkest valleys you must traverse. Stars may be seen from the bottom of a deep well, when they cannot be discerned from the mountaintop. So will you learn things in adversity that you would never have discovered without trouble. There is always a seed of good. Find it and prosper.” Og Mandino

“Prosperity is no just scale; adversity is the only balance to weigh friends.” Plutarch

“In prosperity, our friends know us; in adversity, we know our friends.”  John Churton Collins

“Adversity leads us to think properly of our state, and so is most beneficial to us.” Samuel Johnson

Words of Wisdom–Gautama Buddha on Gratitude and Joy

Share Button

Gautama Buddha lived in ancient India 5th to 4th century BCE and is regarded as the founder of Buddhism. He was an enlightened soul (that phrase is overused, but he really was) who reintroduced a path to let go of the attachment to suffering. He taught a middle ground between over-indulgence and the excessive strictness of other spiritual practices, as well as meditative practices and mindfulness. He was referred to as Buddha, which means “Awakened One” starting two centuries after his death. Below we share some of his wise statements on gratitude and joy.

“Good men and bad men differ radically. Bad men never appreciate kindness shown them, but wise men appreciate and are grateful. Wise men try to express their appreciation and gratitude by some return of kindness, not only to their benefactor, but to everyone else.” Gautama Buddha

“Pain in life is inevitable but suffering is not. Pain is what the world does to you, suffering is what you do to yourself [by the way you think about the ‘pain’ you receive]. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. [You can always be grateful that the pain is not worse in quality, quantity, frequency, duration, etc].” Gautama Buddha

“A noble person is mindful and thankful for the favors he receives from others.” Gautama Buddha

“Reverence, humility, contentment, gratitude and hearing the good Dhamma, this is the best good luck.” Gautama Buddha

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little.” Gautama Buddha

“You have no cause for anything but gratitude and joy.” Gautama Buddha

“The mind is the source of happiness and unhappiness by what it chooses to compare the experience with. If it chooses to compare it to something worse then it will create happiness, gratitude and pride but if it chooses to compare it to something better then it will create unhappiness, bitterness and envy.” Gautama Buddha

“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without. It can be argued that peace and happiness comes from the subjective internalised perspective of realizing things could be worse and being grateful they aren’t. The alternative view that peace and happiness comes from the objective external perspective of having more and better things than at present, while important for growth, can be a never-ending source of jealousy, dissatisfaction and disappointment. A balance of the two, where people are grateful for what they have while striving for more seems the best blended perspective.” Gautama Buddha

“When you realize how perfect [or at least better than it could be] everything is, you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky.” Gautama Buddha

“One who possesses four qualities is deposited in heaven as if brought there. What four? Bodily good conduct, verbal good conduct, mental good conduct, and gratitude or thankfulness. One possessing these four qualities is deposited in heaven as if brought there.” Gautama Buddha

“Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, and you will be filled with joy.” Gautama Buddha

“There is no fire like greed, No crime like hatred, No sorrow like separation, No sickness like hunger of heart, And no joy like the joy of freedom. Health, contentment and trust Are your greatest possessions, And freedom your greatest joy. Look within. Be still. Free from fear and attachment, Know the sweet joy of living in the way.” Gautama Buddha

“Generosity brings happiness at every stage of its expression. We experience joy in forming the intention to be generous. We experience joy in the actual act of giving something. And we experience joy in remembering the fact that we have given.” Gautama Buddha

“The gift of the Truth beats all other gifts. The flavour of the Truth beats all other tastes. The joy of the Truth beats all other joys, and the cessation of desire conquers all suffering.” Gautama Buddha

“Live in Joy, In love, Even among those who hate. Live in joy, In health, Even among the afflicted. Live in joy, In peace, Even among the troubled. Look within. Be still. Free from fear and attachment, Know the sweet joy of living in the way.” Gautama Buddha

“Be quick to do good. If you are slow, The mind, delighting in mischief, Will catch you. Turn away from mischief. Again and again, turn away. Before sorrow befalls you. Set your heart on doing good. Do it over and over again, And you will be filled with joy. A fool is happy Until his mischief turns against him. And a good man may suffer Until his goodness flowers. Do not make light of your failings, Saying, ‘What are they to me?’ A jug fills drop by drop.” Gautama Buddha

“Seeker, empty the boat, lighten the load, be free of craving and judgment and hatred, and feel the joy of the way.” Gautama Buddha

“Whatever suffering there is in this world, all arises from desiring only myself to be happy. And whatever joy there is in this world, all arises from desiring to share my happiness with everyone.” Gautama Buddha
