John Locke (August 29, 1632–October 28, 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, and known as the “father of liberalism.” Liberalism was originally defined as a political and moral philosophy based on the right to private property and personal liberty, basic human rights, and equality under the law. John Locke was one of the most important philosophers of the Enlightenment and his contributions are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence.
Below we list some words of wisdom from John Locke.
“The most precious of all possessions is power over ourselves.”
“There are two sides, two players. One is light, the other is dark.”
“There are a thousand ways to Wealth, but only one way to Heaven.”
“Knowledge is grateful to the understanding, as light to the eyes.”
“Reason is natural revelation, whereby the eternal father of light, and fountain of all knowledge, communicates to mankind that portion of truth which he has laid within the reach of their natural faculties: revelation is natural reason enlarged by a new set of discoveries communicated by God.”
“Good and evil, reward and punishment, are the only motives to a rational creature”
“Reason must be our last judge and guide in everything.”
“Nothing is in the intellect that was not first in the senses.”
“It is one thing to show a man that he is in an error, and another to put him in possession of the truth.”
“But there is only one thing which gathers people into seditious commotion, and that is oppression”
“What worries you, masters you.”
“To love our neighbor as ourselves is such a truth for regulating human society, that by that alone one might determine all the cases in social morality.”
“A father would do well, as his son grows up, and is capable of it, to talk familiarly with him; nay, ask his advice, and consult with him about those things wherein he has any knowledge or understanding. By this, the father will gain two things, both of great moment. The sooner you treat him as a man, the sooner he will begin to be one; and if you admit him into serious discourses sometimes with you, you will insensibly raise his mind above the usual amusements of youth, and those trifling occupations which it is commonly wasted in.”
“With books we stand on the shoulders of giants.”
“The business of education is not to make the young perfect in any one of the sciences, but so to open and dispose their minds as may best make them – capable of any, when they shall apply themselves to it.”
“Curiosity in children, is but an appetite for knowledge. The great reason why children abandon themselves wholly to silly pursuits and trifle away their time insipidly is, because they find their curiosity balked, and their inquiries neglected.”
“Who lies for you will lie against you.”
“What if everything that happened here, happened for a reason?”
“The Bible is one of the greatest blessings bestowed by God on the children of men. It has God for its author; salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture for its matter. It is all pure.”
“For where is the man that has incontestable evidence of the truth of all that he holds, or of the falsehood of all he condemns; or can say that he has examined to the bottom all his own, or other men’s opinions? The necessity of believing without knowledge, nay often upon very slight grounds, in this fleeting state of action and blindness we are in, should make us more busy and careful to inform ourselves than constrain others.”
“The great question which, in all ages, has disturbed mankind, and brought on them the greatest part of their mischiefs … has been, not whether be power in the world, nor whence it came, but who should have it.”
“Wherever law ends, tyranny begins.”
“All men by nature are equal in that equal right that every man hath to his natural freedom, without being subjected to the will or authority of any other man; being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty or possessions.”
“Those are not at all to be tolerated who deny the being of God. Promises, covenants, and oaths, which are the bonds of human society, can have no hold upon an atheist. The taking away of God, though but even in thought, dissolves all.”
“I have no reason to suppose that he, who would take away my Liberty, would not when he had me in his Power, take away everything else.”
“I pretend not to teach, but to inquire.”
“Whoever uses force without Right … puts himself into a state of War with those, against whom he uses it, and in that state all former Ties are canceled, all other Rights cease, and every one has a Right to defend himself, and to resist the Aggressor.”
“The only fence against the world is a thorough knowledge of it.”
“It is practice alone that brings the powers of the mind, as well as those of the body, to their perfection.”
“God is the place of spirits, as spaces are the places of bodies.”

Words of Wisdom—Immanuel Kant
Immanuel Kant (April 22nd, 1724 – February 12th, 1804) was a German philosopher and one of the central Enlightenment thinkers. His comprehensive and systematic works in epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics made him one of the most influential thinkers in modern Western philosophy.
Below we list some words of wisdom by Immanuel Kant.
“Most men use their knowledge only under guidance from others because they lack the courage to think independently using their own reasoning abilities. It takes intellectual daring to discover the truth.”
“Genius is the ability to independently arrive at and understand concepts that would normally have to be taught by another person.”
“You only know me as you see me, not as I actually am.”
“Patience is the strength of the weak, impatience is the weakness of the strong.”
“Great minds think for themselves.”
“But a lie is a lie, and in itself intrinsically evil, whether it be told with good or bad intents.”
“Ingratitude is the essence of vileness.”
“If you punish a child for being naughty, and reward him for being good, he will do right merely for the sake of the reward; and when he goes out into the world and finds that goodness is not always rewarded, nor wickedness always punished, he will grow into a man who only thinks about how he may get on in the world, and does right or wrong according as he finds advantage to himself.”
“Rules for Happiness: something to do, someone to love, something to hope for.”
“We are not rich by what we possess but by what we can do without.”
“Do the right thing because it is right.”
“Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life.”
“The only thing permanent is change.”
“There are two things that don’t have to mean anything, one is music and the other is laughter.”
“The wise man can change his mind; the stubborn one, never.”
“Look closely. The beautiful may be small.”
“If justice perishes, human life on Earth has lost its meaning.”
“All perception is colored by emotion.”
“For peace to reign on Earth, humans must evolve into new beings who have learned to see the whole first.”
“Act in such a way that you will be worthy of being happy.”
“Enlightenment is man’s leaving his self-caused immaturity. Immaturity is the incapacity to use one’s intelligence without the guidance of another. Such immaturity is self-caused if it is not caused by lack of intelligence, but by lack of determination and courage to use one’s intelligence without being guided by another. Sapere Aude! Have the courage to use your own intelligence! is therefore the motto of the enlightenment.”
“Laziness and cowardice explain why so many men. . . remain under a life-long tutelage and why it is so easy for some men to set themselves up as the guardians of all the rest. . . If I have a book which understands for me, a pastor who has a conscience for me, a doctor who decides my diet, I need not trouble myself. If I am willing to pay, I need not think. Others will do it for me.”
“Heaven has given human beings three things to balance the odds of life: hope, sleep, and laughter.”
“All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than reason.”
“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”

Words of Wisdom—Hannah Arendt
Hannah Arendt (October 14, 1906 – December 4, 1975) was a German-born philosopher and historian, and was one of the most prominent political theorists in the last century. She wrote extensively on the topics of totalitarianism, and the nature of power and evil. The Origins of Totalitarianism and The Human Condition are two of her more well-known publications.
Below we list some words of wisdom from Hannah Arendt.
“We all carry fault within.”
“The greater the bureaucratization of public life, the greater will be the attraction of violence. In a fully developed bureaucracy there is nobody left with whom one can argue, to whom one can represent grievances, on whom the pressures of power can be exerted. Bureaucracy is the form of government in which everybody is deprived of political freedom, of the power to act; for the rule by Nobody is not no-rule, and where all are equally powerless we have a tyranny without a tyrant.”
“Evil thrives on apathy and cannot exist without it.”
“All political institutions are manifestations and materializations of power; they petrify and decay as soon as the living power of the people ceases to uphold them.”
“If we do not know our own history, we are doomed to live it as though it were our private fate.”
“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.”
“The history of humanity is not a hotel where someone can rent a room whenever it suits him; nor is it a vehicle which we board or get out of at random. Our past will be for us a burden beneath which we can only collapse for as long as we refuse to understand the present and fight for a better future. Only then — but from that moment on — will the burden become a blessing, that is, a weapon in the battle for freedom.”
“The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lie will now be accepted as truth, and truth be defamed as lie, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world – and the category of truth versus falsehood is among the mental means to this end – is being destroyed.”
“The aim of totalitarian education has never been to instill convictions but to destroy the capacity to form any.”
“One of the greatest advantages of the totalitarian elites of the twenties and thirties was to turn any statement of fact into a question of motive.”
“Power corresponds to the human ability not just to act but to act in concert. Power is never the property of an individual; it belongs to a group and remains in existence only so long as the group keeps together. When we say of somebody that he is ‘in power’ we actually refer to his being empowered by a certain number of people to act in their name. The moment the group, from which the power originated to begin with … disappears, ‘his power’ also vanishes.”
“I’m more than ever of the opinion that a decent human existence is possible today only on the fringes of society, where one then runs the risk of starving or being stoned to death. In these circumstances, a sense of humor is a great help.”
“Violence can destroy power; it is utterly incapable of creating it.”
“Equality…is the result of human organization. We are not born equal.”
“The trouble with lying and deceiving is that their efficiency depends entirely upon a clear notion of the truth that the liar and deceiver wishes to hide.”
“Even in the darkest of times we have the right to expect some illumination, and … such illumination may well come less from theories and concepts than from the uncertain, flickering, and often weak light that some men and women, in their lives and their works, will kindle under almost all circumstances and shed over the time-span that was given them on earth.”
“To think and to be fully alive are the same.”
“This inability to think created the possibility for many ordinary men to commit evil deeds on a gigantic scale, the like of which had never been seen before. The manifestation of the wind of thought is not knowledge but the ability to tell right from wrong, beautiful from ugly. And I hope that thinking gives people the strength to prevent catastrophes in these rare moments when the chips are down.”
“This is the precept by which I have lived: Prepare for the worst; expect the best; and take what comes.”

“If we can just let go and trust that things will work out they way they’re supposed to, without trying to control the outcome, then we can begin to enjoy the moment more fully. The joy of the freedom it brings becomes more pleasurable than the experience itself.”
“Everybody ages. Everybody dies. There is no turning back the clock. So the question in life becomes: What are you going to do while you’re here”
“There are three words I like to repeat to myself: glass half full. Just to remind myself to be grateful for everything I have.”

“The only thing that will make you happy is being happy with who you are, and not who people think you are.”
“We have to embrace obstacles to reach the next stage of joy”
“Youthfulness is connected to the ability to see things new for the first time. So if your eyes still look at life with wonder, then you will seem young, even though you may not be chronologically young.”
“The beauty of getting older is the surprise of what else you can do to make the world a better place with the wisdom that you’ve accrued over those years.”

“if we cultivate compassion for those who have hurt us, we have the possibility of overcoming our anger, pain, and fear. compassion is a great medicine.”

“When you look at the amount of medication that has been administered to children today, it stands the hair up on your arms. Because this is the way that they are helping children manage their emotions.”
“Marriage is ridiculous.”
“I’m not afraid of my femininity and I’m not afraid of my sexuality.”
“Liberation is an interesting word, because you can be liberated from external things, and also from your internal dialogue.”
“Letting go of someone we love is the hardest thing we will ever do. Some people never surrender to love for the fear of being hurt. But to not have loved, to not have felt the immense joy it brings, would have been a far worse kind of death.”
“Comedy breaks down walls. It frees us for just a moment from the ugliness of this world.”
“A rested face is a beautiful face. However you can, find your place of rest and peace.”

Words of Wisdom—Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves (September 2nd, 1964) is an actor who was born in Beirut and raised in Toronto. His breakthrough role was in the 1989 science fiction comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. In addition to many films since then, Keanu has directed, plays bass guitar in the band Dogstar, and is known as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.
Below we list some words of wisdom by Keanu Reeves.
“I always felt a bit alone and isolated from other people…I did a lot of pretending as a child. It was my way of coping with the fact that I didn’t feel like I fit in.”
“The recognition of the law of the cause and effect, also known as karma, is a fundamental key to understand how you’ve created your world, with actions of your body, speech and mind. When you truly understand karma, then you realize you are responsible for everything in your life. It is incredibly empowering to know that your future is in your hands.”
“Nothing ever truly dies. The universe wastes nothing, everything is simply transformed.”
“I guess living without love, without experiencing it or being able to give it is pretty strong punishment.”

“Positive energy brings good feelings, and dark energy often means harm. But the destruction in dark energy is also a subtle aspect of construction, like how even forest fires have their benefits. Sometimes enemies are our best teachers, people can learn from their mistakes, destruction sometimes means rebirth.”
“Falling in love and having a relationship are two different things.”
“The simple act of paying attention can take you a long way.”
“Sure I believe in God and the Devil, but they don’t have to have pitchforks and a long white beard.”
“How do I confront aging? With a wonder and a terror. Yeah, I’ll say that. Wonder and terror.”
“Our dreams can teach us, instruct us, confuse us… sometimes I think they look to be considered. And in terms of like, they are an opportunity and I think they most certainly could be utilized to focus, to try and achieve – whether it’s looking for someone, or influencing us, or inspiring us.”
“A relationship is an imaginative act, it’s an act of creation. Someone said to me the other day that a relationship between a person and a kid is unconditional; but the relationship between adults, to each other, is conditional, in a sense. But that condition can be the best kind.”
“I’m Mickey Mouse. They don’t know who’s inside the suit.”
“Performing an exorcism was like changing your oil. It’s a drag, but necessary.”
“I mean, I went to a Catholic boys school for a year, but that was to play hockey. Religion class was quite contentious for me.”
“Art is about trying to find the good in people, and making the world a more compassionate place.”

Words of Wisdom—Baruch Spinoza
Baruch Spinoza (November 24, 1632–February 21, 1677), born in Amsterdam, was a Portuguese-Jewish philosopher and one of the foremost thinkers of the Enlightenment. He is known as one of the most original and radical philosophers of the seventeenth century.
Below we list some words of wisdom from Baruch Spinoza.
“The most tyrannical of governments are those which make crimes of opinions, for everyone has an inalienable right to his thoughts.”
“If you want the present to be different from the past, study the past.”
“I do not know how to teach philosophy without becoming a disturber of established religion.”
“The highest endeavor of the mind, and the highest virtue, it to understand things by intuition.”
“To know the order of nature, and regard the universe as orderly is the highest function of the mind.”
“Men believe themselves to be free, simply because they are conscious of their actions, and unconscious of the causes whereby those actions are determined.”
“What Paul says about Peter tells us more about Paul than about Peter.”
“Nothing in nature is by chance. Something appears to be chance only because of our lack of knowledge.”
“The holy word of God is on everyone’s lips…but…we see almost everyone presenting their own versions of God’s word, with the sole purpose of using religion as a pretext for making others think as they do.”
“The supreme mystery of despotism, its prop and stay, is to keep men in a state of deception, and with the specious title of religion to cloak the fear by which they must be held in check, so that they will fight for their servitude as if for salvation.”
“Desire nothing for yourself, which you do not desire for others.”
“God is not He who is, but That which is.”
“He who seeks equality between unequals seeks an absurdity.”
“The ultimate aim of government is not to rule, or restrain by fear, nor to exact obedience, but to free every man from fear that he may live in all possible security… In fact the true aim of government is liberty.”
“Laws which prescribe what everyone must believe, and forbid men to say or write anything against this or that opinion, are often passed to gratify, or rather to appease the anger of those who cannot abide independent minds.”
“Laws which can be broken without any wrong to one’s neighbor are a laughing-stock; and such laws, instead of restraining the appetites and lusts of mankind, serve rather to heighten them. Nitimur in vetitum semper, cupimusque negata [we always resist prohibitions, and yearn for what is denied us].”
“Academies that are founded at public expense are instituted not so much to cultivate men’s natural abilities as to restrain them.”
“He who regulates everything by laws, is more likely to arouse vices than reform them.”
“God is the indwelling and not the transient cause of all things.”
“The eternal wisdom of God has shown itself forth in all things, but chiefly in the mind of man, and most of all in Jesus Christ.”
“He whose honor depends on the opinion of the mob must day by day strive with the greatest anxiety, act and scheme in order to retain his reputation. For the mob is varied and inconsistent, and therefore if a reputation is not carefully preserved it dies quickly.”
“Surely human affairs would be far happier if the power in men to be silent were the same as that to speak. But experience more than sufficiently teaches that men govern nothing with more difficulty than their tongues.”
“Everything in nature is a cause from which there flows some effect.”
“After experience had taught me that all the usual surroundings of social life are vain and futile; seeing that none of the objects of my fears contained in themselves anything either good or bad, except in so far as the mind is affected by them, I finally resolved to inquire whether there might be some real good having power to communicate itself, which would affect the mind singly, to the exclusion of all else: whether, in fact, there might be anything of which the discovery and attainment would enable me to enjoy continuous, supreme, and unending happiness.”
“I believe that a triangle, if it could speak, would say that God is eminently triangular, and a circle that the divine nature is eminently circular; and thus would every one ascribe his own attributes to God.”
“Yet nature cannot be contravened, but preserves a fixed and immutable order.”
“We are a part of nature as a whole, whose order we follow.”

Words of Wisdom — Jayne Mansfield
Jayne Mansfield (April 19th, 1933 – June 29th, 1967) was an American actress, singer, entertainer, and Playboy Playmate. She was known for her publicity stunts and personal life, had several box-office successes, and won a Theatre World Award and a Golden Globe Award.
Jayne was one of Hollywood’s original blonde bombshells and is still one of the most recognizable icons of 1950s celebrity culture.
Jayne reportedly had a high IQ, which she claimed was 163. In addition to English, she spoke French, Spanish, German and Italian. She was known as Hollywood’s “smartest dumb blonde” and complained the public didn’t care about her intelligence saying, “They’re more interested in 40–21–35 [a reference to her body measurements].”
Jayne married three times and had five children. She died in a car crash in New Orleans at age 34.
Below we list some words of wisdom by Jayne Mansfield.
“I guess a lot of people think that a girl who shows her bosom and wears tight dresses can’t be close to God. God has always been close to me. Only He knew what was in my heart.”
“I hope that I have given happiness to others. I hope I have given children to the world, and that I have made some kind of a mark for myself here.”
“It is the most wonderful feeling in the world, knowing you are loved and wanted”
“A lot of happiness can be brought to the mentally distraught by a little understanding.”
“I don’t want to get involved in the racial situation at the expense of losing fans. I wouldn’t say anything too strong but I do know that God created us equal and we’re not living up to it.”
“Sex appeal is a wonderful, warm, womanly healthy feeling . . . it comes only from inside, it’s from nothing that’s manufactured. It has nothing to do with measurements or lipstick color. To me, it’s cleanliness, and youth, an effervescent desire to enjoy life.”
“I like being a pin-up girl. There’s nothing wrong with it.”
“Hollywood is the same as any other place when it comes to love, marriage, and divorce … some people have trouble staying married and some people have trouble staying single.”
“You know which title I like best? I like to be called mother.”
“I’ve got the strangest build. It’s big in the hips, small in the waist and I’ve got these enormous … shoulders.”
“A 41-inch bust and a lot of perseverance will get you more than a cup of coffee – a lot more.”
“My father was the only man I ever knew who really loved me unselfishly, who never used me for personal gain.”
“I have always considered my career self and my personal self as two different and separate people. There’s a Jayne Mansfield at home, a wife and devoted mother, and there’s Jayne the sex symbol, which is my career. I have always kept them completely apart and separate.”
“If you want the best things in life you have to earn them for yourself.”
“I’ve been identified with pink throughout my career, but I’m not as crazy about it as I’ve led people to believe. My favorite colors are actually neutrals — black and white — but then who thinks of a movie queen in black and white? Everything has to be in living color.”
“I don’t particularly enjoy publicity, it seems to just follow me around.”
“If you’re going to do something wrong, do it big, because the punishment is the same either way.”

Words of Wisdom—René Descartes
René Descartes (March 31, 1596– February 11,1650) was a French scientist, mathematician and philosopher. He pioneered analytic geometry, is often considered the father of modern philosophy, and contributed greatly to the Age of Reason.
Below we list some words of wisdom from René Descartes.
“Reason is nothing without imagination.”
“God alone is the author of all the motions in the world.”
“Each problem that I solved became a rule, which served afterwards to solve other problems.”
“With me, everything turns into mathematics.”
“Intuitive knowledge is an illumination of the soul, whereby it beholds in the light of God those things which it pleases Him to reveal to us by a direct impression of divine clearness.”
“Whenever anyone has offended me, I try to raise my soul so high that the offense cannot reach it.”
“The two operations of our understanding, intuition and deduction, on which alone we have said we must rely in the acquisition of knowledge.”
“Some years ago I was struck by the large number of falsehoods that I had accepted as true in my childhood, and by the highly doubtful nature of the whole edifice that I had subsequently based on them. I realized that it was necessary, once in the course of my life, to demolish everything completely and start again right from the foundations if I wanted to establish anything at all in the sciences that was stable and likely to last.”
“If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.”
“By ‘God’, I understand, a substance which is infinite, independent, supremely intelligent, supremely powerful, and which created both myself and everything else that exists. All these attributes are such that, the more carefully I concentrate on them, the less possible it seems that they could have originated from me alone. So, from what has been said it must be concluded that God necessarily exists.”
“Situations in life often permit no delay; and when we cannot determine the course which is certainly best, we must follow the one which is probably the best. This frame of mind freed me also from the repentance and remorse commonly felt by those vacillating individuals who are always seeking as worthwhile things which they later judge to be bad.”
“We do not describe the world we see, we see the world we can describe.”
“Conquer yourself rather than the world.”
“I can doubt everything, except one thing, and that is the very fact that I doubt. Simply put – I think, therefore I am.”
“If I simply refrain from making a judgment in cases where I do not perceive the truth with sufficient clarity and distinctness, then it is clear that I am behaving correctly and avoiding error.”
“How can you be certain that your whole life is not a dream?”
“You just keep pushing. You just keep pushing. I made every mistake that could be made. But I just kept pushing.”
“The chief cause of human errors is to be found in the prejudices picked up in childhood.”
“Mathematics is a more powerful instrument of knowledge than any other that has been bequeathed to us by human agency.”
“Before examining this more carefully and investigating its consequences, I want to dwell for a moment in the contemplation of God, to ponder His attributes in me, to see, admire, and adore the beauty of His boundless light, insofar as my clouded insight allows. Believing that the supreme happiness of the other life consists wholly of the contemplation of divine greatness, I now find that through less perfect contemplation of the same sort I can gain the greatest joy available in this life.”
“In God there is an infinitude of things which I cannot comprehend, nor possibly even reach in any way by thought; for it is the nature of the infinite that my nature, which is finite and limited, should not comprehend it.”
“And as it is the most generous souls who have most gratitude, it is those who have most pride, and who are most base and infirm, who most allow themselves to be carried away by anger and hatred.”

“It’s what I learn from the great actors that I work with. Stillness. That’s all and that’s the hardest thing.”
“Still, it can be more effective to accomplish what you need to accomplish with the minimum effort. Watch Anthony Hopkins. He doesn’t appear to be doing anything. He is so still that you can’t see him working, but you are drawn into his character through his very stillness.”
“How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time.”
“You know, the ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about death. When their souls got to the entrance to heaven, the guards asked two questions. Their answers determined whether they were able to enter or not. ‘Have you found joy in your life?’ ‘Has your life brought joy to others?'”
“Never let pride be your guiding principle. Let your accomplishments speak for you.”
“I once heard a wise man say there are no perfect men. Only perfect intentions.”
“Don’t be afraid of what you want. This is your time. The barriers are down.”
“I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice.”
“Forgiveness liberates the soul, it removes fear.”
“Don’t be different just for different’s sake. If you see it differently, function that way. Follow your own muse, always.”
“I always tell my kids if you lay down, people will step over you. But if you keep scrambling, if you keep going, someone will always, always give you a hand. Always. But you gotta keep dancing, you gotta keep your feet moving.”
“The trick to any profession is making it look easy.”
“If your life turns out to be good and you have a tremendous amount of luck in your life, it’s a good thing to turn around and make it work for others.”
“We humans are more concerned with having than with being.”
“You can’t take credit for talent; you can only take credit for using it.”

“I am God. So it’s easy to play him. They say God is in all things. So if God is in me, then I am in God. Therefore, I am God. God does not exist without me.”
“I’m making a great effort because sometimes life is not enjoyable. Sometimes it’s painful and sometimes it’s stressful, sometimes it’s agonizing even, so I think once you get around those humps: strive for pleasure and peace.”
“One universe, four forces, billions of galaxies. The precision and complexity of our world is enough to make even the famous cosmologist go just a little bit crazy. How does it all fit together? Is there a single, overarching design to the cosmos? And if we find it, will we glimpse the mind of God?”
“If you look back on your life and where you started from it’s like looking back down a mountain back to the desert floor. It’s like now I can’t believe I had whatever it takes or perceived whatever it took to get here.”

“I like the character roles. Somewhere back there I really came to the conclusion in my mind that the difference between acting and stardom was major. And that if you become a star, people are going to go to see you. If you remain an actor, they’re going to go and see the story you’re in.”

Words of Wisdom— Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (July 1, 1646–November 14, 1716) was a German scientist, mathematician, and philosopher.
He developed core concepts of integral and differential calculus and was a pioneer in the realm of mechanical calculators. He is known as one of the founders of computer science.
As a philosopher, he was of the scholastic tradition, influenced contemporary analytic philosophy, and viewed our world as one of God’s perfect creations.
Below we list some words of wisdom from Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
“I am convinced that the unwritten knowledge scattered among men of different callings surpasses in quantity and in importance anything we find in books, and that the greater part of our wealth has yet to be recorded.”
“The greatness of a life can only be estimated by the multitude of its actions. We should not count the years, it is our actions which constitute our life.”
“Nothing is more important than to see the sources of invention which are, in my opinion more interesting than the inventions themselves.”
“Reality cannot be found except in One single source, because of the interconnection of all things with one another.”
“I do not believe that a world without evil, preferable in order to ours, is possible; otherwise it would have been preferred. It is necessary to believe that the mixture of evil has produced the greatest possible good: otherwise the evil would not have been permitted. The combination of all the tendencies to the good has produced the best; but as there are goods that are incompatible together, this combination and this result can introduce the destruction of some good, and as a result some evil.”
“Nothing is accomplished all at once, and it is one of my great maxims, and one of the most completely verified, that Nature makes no leaps: a maxim which I have called the law of continuity.”
“God, possessing supreme and infinite wisdom, acts in the most perfect manner, not only metaphysically, but also morally speaking, and…with respect to ourselves, we can say that the more enlightened and informed we are about God’s works, the more we will be disposed to find them excellent and in complete conformity with what we might have desired.”
“Now, as there is an infinity of possible universes in the Ideas of God, and as only one of them can exist, there must be a sufficient reason for God’s choice, which determines him toward one rather than another. And this reason can be found only in the fitness, or the degrees of perfection, that these worlds contain, since each possible thing has the right to claim existence in proportion to the perfection it involves.”
“If we could sufficiently understand the order of the universe, we should find that it exceeds all the desires of the wisest men, and that it is impossible to make it better than it is, not only as a whole and in general but also for ourselves in particular, if we are attached, as we ought to be, to the Author of all, not only as to the architect and efficient cause of our being, but as to our master and to the final cause, which ought to be the whole aim of our will, and which can alone make our happiness.”
“If we were magically shrunk and put into someone’s brain while she was thinking, we would see all the pumps, pistons, gears and levers working away and we would be able to describe the workings completely, in mechanical terms, thereby completely describing the thought processes of the brain. But that description would not contain any mention of thought! It would contain nothing but descriptions of pumps, pistons, levers!”
“Music is the pleasure the human mind experiences from counting without being aware that it is counting.”
“Make me the master of education, and I will undertake to change the world.”
